Violet Victorian Name Brooch Hallmark Chester 1892
This is a very pretty English Victorian Silver Name Brooch for Violet. It is a very attractive with applied balls to the edges, in the Etruscan style and with finely engraved decoration surrounding the name. The name,VIOLET, is picked out in applied fancy block capital letters and this antique brooch has a curved cut outline to it. It is a quality item with the makers marks 'AS’ for the silversmith Albert Sydenham who worked in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter in Frederick Street. It also has the full Chester Hallmark for the year 1892 ( small letter ‘I’) . It is in good condition and measures 1.5 cms by 4.5cms approximately. To the reverse it has a firm pin and fastens to an old fashioned 'c' type clasp. Name brooches are becoming very popular again and they have an interesting history. Name brooches were a great favourite with Victorian and Edwardian ladies. These old brooches and pins started out as name badges for the staff in large country houses and later became popular sweetheart brooches. Many were made in Birmingham, England's jewellery quarter, and they are becoming most fashionable again with the resurgence of lovely old names that were popular in the 19th and early 20th Century.
