Vintage Wool work Bag with Forget-me-knot Flowers
This is a most interesting hand worked bag. I am unsure whether it is petitpoint or grospoint work as the stitches on the embroidery look a little larger than other bags I've handled in the past. Both sides of this bag are scattered with floral sprigs. The little multishaded blue flowers ,with yellow middles, look to me like forget-me-knots. Pale and darker green leaves and a sprinkling of pink buds make up the posies. There are a dozen on each side of the bag, a lovely effect on the plain black background. The woolwork itself if quite course in texture and the piece has been made by hand rather than machine. The lining is plain black and the frame is a silver tone metal. The purse has a 'kissing' type clasp and is suspended from a chain a little over 12 inches long in total ( 6 inches each side). I would estimate this handbag to have been made between the 1930s and the 1950s. It is approximately 6 inches by 8 inches in size. This would look fabulous for display, it is robust enough to use or would be a marvellous item for collectors of vintage clothes and accessories.
