Victorian 19th Century Locket Back ‘EMILY' Name Brooch - Sterling Silver
This original Victorian name brooch for Emily is hallmarked sterling silver. It was hallmarked in Birmingham and has the Lion Passant mark to show it is 925 Sterling, the Anchor for the Birmingham Assay Office and a lower case letter ‘g’ for the year 1881 . The round brooch has a traditional Etruscan-style 'ball' effect pattern all around the rim. There is also a castellated brick edge too. Then the brooch steps up a level and the pretty name “Emily” has been finely engraved on a decorative background. To the reverse there is a locket compartment. The original glazed panel is missing but it has been replaced with an acrylic behind the retainer so could be used to contain a lock of hair a pressed flower or tiny portrait just as it would have done over 140 years ago! This wonderful brooch fastens with an old-fashioned 'c' type clasp. It is just about 3.5cm inches in diameter. Offered in really great condition this is a rare and desirable piece. I have gently cleaned it leaving some of the aged patina as this can be desirable to some collectors. It would, however, buff up nice and shiny with the use of a silver cloth.
It is lovely to collect sentimental jewellery and this ‘Emily' brooch would fit nicely into a collection or maybe would make a wonderful gift for your Emily!
