Victorian - 1920's Lorgnettes on long handle - Faux tortoiseshell (Sorry this item has sold)

I couldn't resist these amazing lorgnettes they are so unusual!  Here is a collectable, yet usable, antique which I would estimate is from the late Victorian period.  I am no expert with lorgnettes so they could be Edwardian or as late as the 1920's.  They have been made in the early plastic material celluloid to imitate Tortoiseshell and have a good dark brown mottled colour.  The lenses are magnifying and help to make small print bigger. You can imagine a dowager duchess type lady peering through them as she reads her novel or the latest gossip in the penny dreadful newspaper! In fact they would make an excellent film prop for a period drama too. The lenses fold neatly into the handle after use.  The handle part has a scrolled and pierced decoration and a little loop at the bottom which would be used to suspend these glasses on a chain or silk to enable them to be worn around the neck.  The handle part of the lorgnettes measures just over 23cms with the spectacle part measuring approx 10.5cms.  Each glass lens is about 3cms by 2cms. This unusual item would make a great addition to your Vintage Costume collection or would be perfect for the Theatre or for on the Stage, or for vintage and  bakelite era early plastic collectors.
