Vase of Flowers - Vintage Lucite Brooch 1940's (SOLD)
This 1940's Brooch is a good example of the reverse carved Lucite pins that were very popular during the forties and fifties. The design is a simple vase overflowing with faded purple flowers and leaves. It is just the sort of picture that was embroidered onto cushions and made into tapestries in the 'make do and mend' era during World War Two and just after. Measuring approx 2inches by 1.5 inches and being quarter of an inch thick this vintage brooch is a nice large sized example. The brooch is in very good condition and it benefits from a 'rainbow rim' which reflects the muted colours of the floral arrangement. There is a brass pin which fastens into a 'c' type clasp.
This vintage pin is a great collectable for anyone interested in Bakelite era and early plastics . Lucite was Dupont's trade name for their acrylic plastic material which they patented in the 1930's and is usually the name given to brooches and pins of this type. The most common theme for them is flowers, some abstract and Art Deco in design, others very detailed - so you can tell exactly which flower is being depicted! Lucite brooches are see through so take on the colour of the item of clothing that they are pinned to. They look fresh and pretty on white and light colours and striking and dramatic on black and dark colours - How will you wear yours?
