USA American Hand Carved Red Floral Lucite Brooch 1940s - 1950s (sold)
This vintage square shaped lucite brooch has three bold bright red open flowers and four very detailed kelly green leaves decorating it. The flowers and foliage have been reverse carved into the lucite and the floral picture sits within the square so that there is a point above and below it. To either side the points have been cut off. The angle of the carving on this vintage brooch adds to its style and appeal. Dating from the late 1940s or early 1950s this old brooch is in very good condition. It is approximately 3 cms square and a lilttle over half a centimetre thick. The edges on this vintage lucite brooch have been bevelled to give a reflection all around. It has a brass pin with a roll over end - a bit like an old tie pin and the two ends of this pin show. This is a great example of reverse carved lucite from the USA. This piece is typical of American produced work as on the back of the brooch the reverse carved flowers and leaves have been infilled to protect their colour. This great vintage pin is as bright and cheerful now as the day it was carved.
This vintage pin is a great collectable for anyone interested in Bakelite era and early plastics . Lucite was Dupont's trade name for their acrylic plastic material which they patented in the 1930's and is usually the name given to brooches and pins of this type. The most common theme for them is flowers, some abstract and Art Deco in design, others very detailed - so you can tell exactly which flower is being depicted! Lucite brooches are see through so take on the colour of the item of clothing that they are pinned to. They look fresh and pretty on white and light colours and striking and dramatic on black and dark colours - How will you wear yours?
