Tiny Victorian Period Micro Mosaic Brooch (Sold)
This little antique brooch looks like a button as it is such a small size being under 2cms in diameter. It might be small but it is perfectly formed with so much detail. The middle section of this 19th Century brooch is 1 cm in diameter but in that section alone there are two open flower blooms - a rose and daisy type flower plus some buds and some 30 leaves with a white tile border! This antique brooch is one of the finest kind of micro mosaics with flowers and leaves to the centre and a traditional caned pattern in the Florentine style around the edges. It dates from the English Victorian period but it is most likely Italian in origin. This kind of micro mosaic jewellery has been hand made in Italy for almost 200 years and this little antique brooch is around 120 years old. Many tiny coloured glass tiles or 'tessarae' have been used to make up the design. One large open bloom in shade of red and white plus a white and yellow daisy with some red and blue bits in the floral centre. Detailed shaped leaves in a dark green to one side and lighter greens to the other frame the floral middle. The work on this brooch is particularly fine. This lovely antique micro mosaic brooch is in very good order with just a few little chips to some of the outer blue and white caned glass tessarae. These do not detract in any way from the beauty of the brooch. The brooch is made from a brass metal with a gold washed finish. This delightful antique brooch fastens with a long pin and an old fashioned 'c' type clasp. It is also marked with the stamped letters 'PS' on the reverse which are most likely the maker's mark. The gilded brass metal has an aged patina and I have not cleaned the brooch preferring to leave it in its 'antiqued' condition.
