SOLD. Art Nouveau Butterfly Brooch - Hand-Embroidered Pin - Circa 1910 - 1920 (SOLD)
A hand embroidered brooch which is around one hundred years old is on offer here. This lovely brooch is quite unique and it depicts a beautiful and exotic butterfly or moth. This brooch is Art Nouveau and has been carefully hand stitched onto a purple fabric using purple, light mauve, brown, blue, pink and green stitches. The butterfly is curved and has wonderful antennae and a nice fat body. Its position reminds me of the Caterpillar in Alice in Wonderland! Around the rim of the brooch an orange-red tone has been used to create a cross stitch border. To the reverse there is a brown fabric, it appears to have faded black initials on it - I guess the embroiderer left a little signature! The pin for this butterfly brooch is a guarded metal type which has been inset into the item. There is a slight dome effect to the front as the brooch is padded. All in all this is in wonderful condition for its age with just some slight fading that is to be expected on work dating back to the beginning of the 20th Century. I estimate this lovely brooch was made and enjoyed around 1910 - 1920. This pin measures 2 inches in diameter and is nice and light so suitable to wear on most outfits.
