Here we have a rare and very special vintage Lea Stein brooch - The Diving Lady Pin, a super stylish design much sought after by collectors. This brooch is a superb example of the techniques used by Lea Stein in her jewellery - it has layers of Rhodoid and the layering and curving of this material is used to great effect on this sought after lady brooch. The brooch bears similarities to the Tennis Girl Brooch; the lady and her costume being virtually the same but with a Tennis Racket held in her hand against her pantaloon trousers. This Diving Lady doesn't hold a tennis racquet but is identical in its graceful curves which convey movement in such an elegant way. Measuring 12cms by almost 2cms at its longest and widest points this brooch is large and so can be a real statement piece of designer jewellery. For this brooch Lea Stein has used the complementary colours of ivory, red, yellow and black which will ensure it is a great contrast to most lapels! The size of this beauty makes it perfect for the Jacket or Coat. So our lovely sporty girl brooch has urchin style red hair, sleeves and waistband and red detail to the ankles of her harem style trousers. The trousers are a pale golden yellow with soft pearl and darker lemon marmalade flecks. Her neckerchief scarf is black as are the little ballet style pump shoes. The face, arm and ankles are in a natural ivory colour. With a Lea Stein, Paris signed white metal back and pin with roll over clasp the brooch is in excellent vintage condition. The laminates to the reverse on this brooch Are orange, Ivorians and black.
LEA STEIN was born in Paris in 1931 and worked as a dress designer. She began making her now famous Jewellery when her husband, Fernand Steinberger, ( a Plastics Chemist ) discovered a process of laminating cellulose acetate to create a unique range of colours & patterns.
Buttons for her frocks were their first products; followed by brooches, bangles and earrings. The factory was forced to close in the 1980’s but has since re-opened much to the relief of costume jewellery collectors and Lea Stein fans. Lea Stein loves to produce designs based on animals and flowers. Now she is quite an elderly lady but still introduces a couple of new designs each year.
Each brooch has the trademark ‘V’ shaped pin on the back and is signed: ‘LEA STEIN PARIS’. The manufacturing process used means that no two pieces are exactly alike. The fabulous designs, the ease of wearing and their quirky appeal are just some of the reasons why they are so collected around the world
