This brooch is a nice example of the 1940's /1950's home-spun style, with the kind of design that features on some of the lovely hand-worked tablecloths, tray cloths and napkins as well as things like biscuit tins and magazine covers of that time. Here we have a little golden thatched cottage with white walls and an orange front door. It sits at the end of a path and under the shade of a huge tree! It is obviously an Autumn scene as the tree has golden and orange toned leaves on branches in a pale blue sky. The stitches are completely covering the fabric so I have no idea what fabric was used but would guess it may well be linen or cotton and I think that the work is in long stitch but the needlewoman or man who created this brooch has managed to give a 3-D effect in the design. Measuring approximately 2.25 inches by 1.5 inches, the brooch is in very good order with just marks associated with its age to the back of the brooch and a little around the rim. The needlework is mounted in a gilt tone metal. This brooch is in an oval shaped gallery with a decorative edge. There is a clear plastic front protecting the embroidery. The back has a secure rollover 'C' type clasp and pin mount. Embroidered and hand-made brooches were made in quantity during the 'make-do-and-mend' years of world war two and they remained popular throughout the 1940's, 1950's and 1960's. You could also buy kits with threads, pre-printed designs on fabric and the necessary mounts to complete your piece of jewellery. This pin would be lovely to wear or add to your collection of Vintage brooches or old needlework.
