SOLD 1870s Victorian Cameo - made of Vulcanite early plastic made to imitate Whitby Jet
Here is an extremely good example of a Victorian Vulcanite cameo-style brooch to wear for impact or to add to a collection of antique plastic jewellery and brooches. This brooch is a magnificent example of the Victorian pioneering spirit of invention . This true Antique piece of jewellery was created from Vulcanite - a hardened composition material made from rubber with sulphur. It is a good, large size being 2 inches by 2.25 inches with the side 3-D profile standing out by three quarters of an inch. We have an oval press moulded piece with a woven gallery framing the detailed cameo of a classical lady with eyes closed so probably designed as Mourning jewellery - worn to indicate the loss of a loved one. She is reminiscent of the popular carved Whitby jet jewellery that was much worn in the mid to late Victorian era. Offered in very good condition this eye-popping brooch has two sturdy brass connectors and a long steel white metal pin to the reverse and closes with a simple ‘c’ type retainer. This is a hard to find piece of early costume jewellery in remarkable order - it is a truly amazing brooch.
