Reverse-carved Lucite 1950s Pink Roses Brooch and Earclips (sold)
Here we have a fabulous matching suite of brooch and clip-on earrings in reverse-carved Lucite. Both pieces feature naturalistic pink roses with leaves; a trio of open blooms on the brooch and single open rose with a border of leaves on the earrings. This type of vintage costume jewellery is becoming very sought after with the increasing interest in bakelite era plastics. The floral pieces are so easy to wear and enjoy. This round vintage brooch and matching earrrings both date to the 1950s. Lucite is Dupont's Trade name for their acrylic plastic which they patented in 1936. ICI used the name Perspex for their similar material. In the Jewellery trade the name ' Lucite' is favoured for all acrylic pieces as it was the most widely coined term for American Jewelry.
Just recently a collection of these early plastic pins appeared on the BBC Antiques Roadshow. It is easy to see why they appeal - each piece has been hand produced so there are natural variations in the style and design. Furthermore, the material is light making the brooches very easy to wear. The 'see-through' nature of the Lucite makes the brooch take on a different appearance when pinned onto various coloured clothes. This brooch is clear with mainly pink coloured roses with faded soft grey green leaves. Both the roses and leaves reflect in the rim of the pin and earrings also. The vintage brooch is mounted on a gold tone back pin which fastens with a guarded 'c' type clasp. It measures about 4.5 cms in diameter and is just over half a cm thick. The round earrings are the same thickness but are 2.5 cms in diameter. These earclips have a gilt metal back and clip. Both the pin and the ear clips are in excellent condition; ready to wear out or to add to your collection of early plastic vintage jewellery.
