Large Red Roses Brooch
This gorgeous brooch depicts a fully open Red Rose with two buds and green leaves on brown shoots. The embroidery appears to be over stitch on a panel of beige coloured linen. The work, obviously done by hand, is good with the stitches worked in different directions to give shading to the rose. Measuring approximately 2.5 inches (6.5cms) by 1.75 inches (5cms) the work is mounted in a gilt metal oval shaped gallery with a rope edge pattern. There is a clear plastic front protecting the embroidery. The back has just a 'C' type clasp and pin mount. Embroidered and hand-made brooches were made in quantity during the 'make-do-and-mend' years of world war two and they remained popular throughout the 1940's, 1950's and 1960's. You could also buy kits with threads, pre-printed designs on fabric and the necessary mounts to complete your piece of jewellery. This would be lovely to wear or add to your collection of Vintage Flower pins or old needlework. As the red rose is a symbol of true love this would also make a great Valentine's Day present!
