DOROTHY Victorian Silver Name Brooch - Dorothy- Birmingham 1897 (Sold)
The design of this late Victorian antique silver name pin is a little different to the usual bar brooch or open pierced round name brooches usually found. This DOROTHY name pin is in hallmarked sterling silver and was assayed in Birmingham in 1897. The name 'DOROTHY' is picked out in applied upper case lettering on an elongated oval background. The silver on this lovely antique brooch has been engraved with an open daisy type flower with fern leaves. It also has a scalloped pattern decorating the rim. Made of sterling silver this Victorian name pin is in excellent order. The Dorothy name brooch measures 4.5cms by 1.75cms approx.
I never overclean antique brooches as collectors often want their Victorian or Edwardian jewellery to look as if it has some age! This would clean up bright and shiny with a silver cleaner if you wanted it to look like new!
Name brooches were a great favourite with Victorian and Edwardian ladies. These old brooches and pins started out as name badges for the staff in large country houses and later became popular sweetheart brooches. Many were made in Birmingham, England's jewellery quarter, and they are becoming most fashionable again with the resurgence of lovely old names that were popular in the 19th and early 20th Century.
