Delizza & Elster Juliana Opalescent Foil Glass Ice Blue Brooch 1960s
This gorgeous Juliana brooch by Delizza and Elster, USA is set with jewels in various tones of blue. The photos really don't do it justice - it has such depth and colour in real life and it has been almost impossible to capture this in these photos. This designer brooch is finished in silver tone, rhodium coated white metal and has a layered structure. It is set with four pear cut and nine round Aurora Borealis faceted glass jewels which have all manner of colours radiating from them including shades of pink, purple and blue. Then we have one round and four oval large opalescent foiled glass cabochons. These jewels are sometimes known as "dragon's breath" stones when they occur in reds as they have an inward fire to them. In contrast the blue version has ice qualities that make each stone glow like an opal. In the manufacture of Juliana jewellery every stone was expertly prong-set by hand. The larger cabochons have fancy multi-clawed settings. The brooch has no signature, which is the case with so many beautiful Juliana pieces. There are many “clues” that it is indeed by D and E which include the distinctive claws, the closed setting with “run-on” metalwork and the actual jewels used and the design of the brooch. This fantastic vintage costume jewellery pin dates to circa 1960s and is stylish and a good size. Measuring 5cms by 4.5cms with a depth of nearly 2cms this vintage brooch is in excellent condition. The pin fastening to the reverse closes into a secure “roll-over” type clasp. This vintage brooch would be great at the "something blue" for a Bride. It would sit well on all kinds of outfits and would be at home in a collection of 1960s costume jewellery and brooches.
