Art Nouveau Silver Button - Chrysanthemum Design English Sterling Silver Hallmarked 1902
From the Edwardian period here is a very pretty single Sterling Silver button with a classic Art Nouveau design. The button has a Chrysanthemum Flower with a swirled leaf in an open design around it. It is not completely round in shape as it has an outline following the flower and leaf which is a typical Art Nouveau feature. This antique silver button has a full hallmark for Birmingham stamped on the front. There is an Anchor for the Birmingham Assay Office, A Lion Passant to show that it is an English Sterling Silver button and the letter 'c' for the year 1902. There is also the maker's mark of William Hutton and Sons of Hanley Street, Birmingham . It is likely that button was made by the casting process and it was probably made as well as assayed in Birmingham where there was much jewellery making and silversmithing in the Victorian times and in the first half of the 20th Century. The button has a diameter of approximately 2cms and has a self shank. It has a good solid feel to it and is in very good condition with just a little patina built up which you would expect on vintage and antique jewellery and real silver buttons of this age.
This floral button would be delightful stitched to a hat or as the top button on a garment. It could be used like a brooch if a secure safety pin was employed through the loop self shank to fix it in place.
