Antique Edwardian Crystal Necklace - Purple Jewels - Showstopping and Rare!(SOLD)
There aren't enough wonderful things I can say about this antique necklace! It is truly beautiful, in exceptionally good order and is one of those pieces of antique costume jewellery that has been made as well as 'the real thing'! This amazing old necklace is set with 32 faux amethyst cut glass crystal stones - 31 small gems and one large one for effect. Each mauve stone is faceted and open set so that it really sparkles and always will. Every one of these hand-cut crystals is cupped and claw set into a Platinol plated metal. I would imagine that it is real silver under this finish as, at this time, Platinol plating was used to make the jewels look like they were set in Platinum and also to prevent silver from tarnishing. Every stone connects to the next in the row by a double link and this vintage necklace fastens securely with a circular bolt clasp. The necklace measures approximately 16 inches around the neck with a dropper of approximately 2 inches. The large crystal is a little over 1.5 cms in diameter with the smaller purple crystals being just under 1 cm in diameter. This is a piece from the period between the elegant Edwardian age at the very beginning of the 20th Century up to the emergence of Art Deco styling around the 1920's. The lavender mauve colour is just like a real amethyst; indeed amethyst stones were a favourite with Queen Alexandra and feature a lot in antique Edwardian jewellery. This necklace will be one to treasure and would be perfect wedding jewellery; a fabulous collectors piece or just lovely and unusual to wear for important, stylish occasions.
