A Victorian 1900 Sterling Silver Sports Fob Medal - Birmingham
Here is a very interesting Sterling Silver watch fob medallion. This high quality fancy fob has pierced and engraved decorations to the front . There is a rather unusual Shield shaped vacant cartouche, which reminds me of the Club symbol in a deck of cards or possibly a Heart. The reverse of the fob bears the silver fineness 925 indicator in the form of the lion passant, the anchor hallmark for Birmingham and the date letter 'a' for the year 1900. It also has the mark " V & S" being the makers mark for Vaughton and Sons listed as Goldsmiths, Silversmiths & Medallists of Livery Street, Birmingham. This Victorian period gentleman's accessory is a genuine antique - over 120 years old yet still in excellent condition. These silver medal-like fobs were usually worn on watch chains and were also used as awards for sporting and academic achievement. They are often found with engraving which tells more about how they were used and why they were presented. This one has a curled ribbon banner to the top and Laurel leaves to each side of the shield so was obviously intended for "the victor" - there is also a little ball resting to the top - possibly a football. As this nice old silver fob medal has a vacant cartouche it is suitable for you to engrave your initials or other details if wished. The fob is in excellent order with just the few surface scratches and although clean has developed the patina you would expect on a piece of jewellery of this age. This silver fob measures 1.5 inches by 1.25 inches approx at its widest points and it also has its original round silver bolt ring to attach it to a watch chain. The bolt ring has a lion mark, typical of items of the Victorian period.
