Here is a very interesting early Cycling interest Sterling Silver watch fob medallion. This high quality fancy fob has cast decorations to the front with the image of a cyclist on a bicycle on a round to the centre . The fob is executed in a Maltese cross style and is most attractive. The reverse of the fob bears the silver fineness 925 indicator in the form of the lion passant, the anchor hallmark for Birmingham and the date letter 'y’ for the year 1898. It also has the mark " GL” being the makers mark for George Loveridge and Co. makers of Spencer Street, Birmingham. This Victorian period gentleman's accessory is a genuine antique - over 120 years old yet still in excellent condition. These silver medal-like fobs were usually worn on watch chains and were also used as awards for sporting and academic achievement. They are often found with engraving which tells more about how they were used and why they were presented. This one has a plain reverse, so this nice old silver fob medal is suitable for you to engrave your initials or other details if wished. The fob is in excellent order with just a few surface scratches and although clean has developed the patina you would expect on a piece of jewellery of this age. This silver fob measures 1.25 inches by 1.25 inches approx at its widest points and it also has its original round silver bolt ring to attach it to a watch chain. The bolt ring is unmarked typical of small silver items of the Victorian period.
