A hand Embroidered Violets Brooch 1940s - 1950s
This sweet brooch illustrates six lovely violets, not as a bunch but growing. The flowers are picked out in several shades of purple and mauve and the leaves and stems too feature two different shades of deep green making a very pretty and realistic picture. This has a 1940's feel about it and is like many of the lovely hand-worked tablecloths, tray cloths and napkins of that time. The linen background is a dark beige colour and the embroidery has a slightly textured effect. Measuring a little over 2.5 inches (6.5cms) by 1.75 inches (5cms) the work is mounted in a silver coloured chromed oval gallery with a rope patterned border. There is a clear plastic front protecting the embroidery. The back has a secure rollover 'C' type clasp and pin mount. Embroidered and hand-made brooches were made in quantity during the 'make-do-and-mend' years of world war two and they remained popular throughout the 1940's, 1950's and 1960's. You could also buy kits with threads, pre-printed designs on fabric and the necessary mounts to complete your piece of jewellery. A lucky find of an old pamphlet whilst digging through a delightful pile of old knitting patterns means I know that this Violet pin did come from an English pattern. It published by William Briggs of Manchester . This would be lovely to wear or add to your collection of Vintage Flower pins or old needlework.
