1960's Sterling Silver Hippo Brooch - Scandinavian
This amazing Hippo pin is made of sterling silver, it is Danish with an English silver hallmark which is the import mark for the year 1961. It is very much in the style of the sixties and is a funky abstract work. I think you will either absolutely love it or absolutely hate it ( a bit like Marmite!) It is a good size and the work has been very beautifully done by the Silversmith. I think it started out with a frame shape which has been infilled with tiny pieces and blobs of silver, quite a lot of work. It measures 6cms by a bit less than 3cms and has a good substantial weight. The Scandinavians are excellent silversmiths and their work is always of the highest quality whether it is enamelled or sterling silver. There are many notable silversmiths and jewellery manufacturing companies in Denmark,Sweden,Findland and Norway . Their most famous Silversmith is , without question, Georg Jensen but other great companies and makers produced amazing vintage silver jewellery which is stylish and of the very highest quality. My list of great scandinavian silver jewelry makers would include Jensen, of course, but also Michelsen, David Andersen, N.E. From, Marius Hammer, Hans Hansen, Nanna Ditzel, Karen Strand, Henning Koppel,Bjorn Weckstrom and Lapponia.
