1940's Silver Brooch - Two Ballet Dancers - Sterling Silver Ballet Pin (Sold)
This is an excellent example of post-war British silversmithing with an Iconic design by Frederick Massing-ham for the company D.H. Phillips. It is one of a series that the artist produced in silver in the late 1940s and early1950s which all featured Ballet Dancers. The pins were produced in two sizes, some designs featured a single ballerina and some a couple. This particular Ballerina Brooch is made of cast sterling silver and is clearly hallmarked in Birmingham with the year mark for 1948. It also has the DHP maker's Mark and a design registration mark on it. Interestingly enough these marks feature clearly on the back of both the dancers. This silver brooch, which features two ballerina's dancing is a small sized example, measuring 4.5 cms by 3 cms at is widest points. This silver 1940s dancers brooch is very detailed, you can see the folds in the ballet dancers' full skirts and the curls in their hair. Both ballerinas are dancing up on their points with one leg stretched out behind and one has her hands raised above her head, whilst the other has hers elegantly pointing in front of her. What a wonderful gift this would be for anyone who loves The Ballet! Some of the collection of Fred Massingham's designs are on display in the Jewellery area of the UK's Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. This dancers brooch is in excellent condition and fastens with a silver guard over the pin.
