1930's Art Deco Evening Bag - this one is gorgeous and unusually large in size! (Sold)
This richly beaded evening purse is an Art Deco masterpiece! It shows the richness of design from that era. I would estimate that this bag is circa 1930 as it has some bold geometric flashes on the reverse and softer circle and abstract flower designs to the front. It looks as if it has hardly been used! The beadwork has been done on a gauze fine material whilst the interior is a rich satin fabric. There is a small pocket stitched inside the bag which contains a mirror and it has a tiny label that just says 'foreign'. There are a couple of small red dots on the inside of the bag, maybe lipstick from its past? The little mirror has silvered slightly too, a thing that often happens to antique glass, but you can still use it! The beadwork, which is all hand done, consists of lots of lovely rich creamy bronze faux pearls, some lighter cream seed beads and some silver bugle beads too. This gives great contrast to the stylish design. The bag is most likely continental European, a lot of this kind of work was done in France and Belgium in the Art Deco period. There is a beaded handle on the reserve, just large enough to allow the bag to be carried (as they so elegantly were at the time) over three fingers of the hand, or to allow it to be suspended over a sash. The dimensions are approximately 6.5 inches by 7 inches with the ability to expand to about 2 inches at its widest points. The bag closes with a flap over lid and a small press stud. The condition is great, my beady eye has spotted a miniscule discolouration on the reverse of the bag which is very hard to see and does not detract in any way from this amazing item. Whilst checking it over I also spotted the sign of a hand beader's art! I will explain: when the women were working ,so painstakingly, on these pieces they often worked a 'rogue' bead, one of a different colour, into the piece to prove it was hand done. Sure enough, this one has a cheeky silver seed bead worked into the swirly pattern that covers the bag. I adore it when I find this on these lovely things and I hope you will too! The bag is robust enough to use, with care. It would be just the thing for 'something old' for a Bride, or great for your vintage evening purse and handbag collection. An elegant item from the stylish 1930's.
