1920's Flapper Armlet with Egyptian Decorations (Sold)
Here is a super bangle from the 1920's which is very collectable and interesting. Once Howard Carter and his expedition had discovered King Tutenkhamun's treasures in the Valley of Kings in 1922 there was a real trend for all things 'Egyptian' and this Flapper armlet would have been all the rage then! It is decorated with Scarab Beetles in flight and crawling, an Ibis bird , An Asp or snake, a Fish, A Sphinx and a ancient Egyptian, who could be Cleopatra! They have a cartoon quality and are certainly amusing! The bangle is made of early plastic imitating Ivory and is Celluloid or 'Ivorine' which was the name given to this Faux Ivory at that time. The designs are silhouetted onto the bangle with a black background which does show a bit of its age with a couple of worn patches. I mention this just to ensure you will not be disappointed, but I can honestly say the wear is just a sign of the age of the item and it is not bad enough to spoil it. This should delight any collector of antique and vintage bangles, early bakelite-era plastics or anyone with an interest in Ancient Egypt. I should mention the size which is approx 7.5cms in diameter. This would suit a large wrist as a bangle or a tiny as an above elbow armlet - which is how this would have been worn in the 1920's.
