1920s Evening Purse with Tassel - hand made crochet silk thread
This is a really lovely example of skilled craft work from the first quarter of the 20th Century. This bag has been handmade with crochet using many silk threads in a variety of complementing colours. We have greens, yellow, pale pink and blue used to make up a pretty pouch style purse. Dating from the1920's era the bag has a design that almost replicates a finely woven basket in its effect. The handle has a simple crochet stitch in bands. There is use of a covered ring to each side of the handle to suspend the bag and a gorgeous tassel to the bottom. The lining ( shown in one of the photos) is in green fabric showing a few age marks but clean, robust and not torn or holed at all. This evening purse is in a Dorothy Bag pouch style that just freely opens at the top of the purse. The condition of the bag is excellent with no rips or stains. It is a nice, neat size, being just 14.5 inches from the top of the handle to the bottom of the tassel with 6.25 inches in width at its widest point. It would be possible to use the bag or just add it to a display for interior decoration or to include in a collection of early bags or hand-made work.
