1910 - 1930 Miniature Mesh Purse (Sorry this item is sold)
This is a very fine tiny mesh purse in excellent condition. There are no hallmarks (and I really don't like to acid test to see if items are silver as you risk damaging something old and beautiful ) so I am assuming this is a silver plated or white metal purse. It dates from the Edwardian into the Art Deco period. It is a perfect miniature copy of the mesh evening bags that were so popular at that time. This little bag measures just 2.5 inches by 3 inches including the fringing at the bottom. The frame has a 'kissing' type clasp and it is all suspended on a chain measuring only 5 inches in total. There is no lining at all in this purse and I don't really know if it ever was lined. The chain mesh is very close so you would not risk the coins really showing or falling through . Every time I find an antique mesh purse I am reminded of the fate that some of them suffered during the World War Two period. I once found an old household advice article in a magazine from the 1940's which suggested that 'old fashioned' mesh purses made excellent pot scourers! Oh perish the thought! I wonder how many little gems ended their days cleaning pots? Still between 1939 and 1945 Britain was busy "make doing and mending "so you could say that mesh purses played their part in the war effort! Back to this wonderous little item, it may have been intended for a child or a doll, it would be great for a miniature collection or a lovely thing for those who adore vintage costume and accessories from the past.
