1880's ROSE Victorian Silver Brooch - 19th Century Antique Rose for Love Sentimental Jewel
This is an unusual and attractive Victorian Silver Brooch. It has a Maltese Cross shape with a pretty applied English rose to the centre. The Rose in Victorian times was a message of Love. Equally this could have been a name pin for the pretty name of Rose as the Victorians did enjoy a puzzle and clue! The engraved work is a repeated scroll and line pattern to the borders and the shape has cut work and layers. The item bears the following clear hallmarks - an Anchor to show it was assayed in Birmingham; A gothic letter O for the year 1888 and the Lion Passant to show it is 925 Sterling Silver. It also has the makers letters WCM for William Clark Manton of Hylton Street, Birmingham UK. It is typical of the jewellery popular in the late 19th Century being both sentimental, pretty and practical . The brooch measures an 1 inch approximately in each direction. The pin fastens with an old fashioned c type clasp. Smart, wearable and different, this would make a lovely gift for anyone named ROSE. It is a pretty pin but is also special enough to be included in a collection of Victorian or antique silver items.
